10 Quick Public Speaking TipsWednesday, March 21, 2012 · Share
Public speaking is something that most people don't do more than a handful of times in their life yet it's something that no one wants to do poorly. As everyone who has done it at least once knows, it's not easy getting up in front of a crowd and start talking about something. Fortunately public speaking is a skill that can be learned with practice and the right tips. Here are 10 quick tips to help you speak effectively.
Remember who your audience is and at what level of understanding they're at as you prepare your presentation's content.
The more your practice your speech the better you'll present it. Make sure to rehearse with your materials too if you have any.
After practicing your speech in front of someone, have them ask you questions in order to get an idea of what audience members might ask.
Ideally any slides should be graphics and not words as people read faster than they hear and they will become impatient.
Try to get to know the room you'll be speaking in beforehand. For example test the microphone and other equipment if possible.
If you're speaking informatively about something, try to act like a world class teacher when on the stage.
With rare exception, you only need to memorize the introduction, personal story, jokes and transitional parts of your speech, not the whole thing.
Look at the audience before you begin to let them know you're interested in them.
Speak to the person farthest away from you in the room to ensure your voice is loud enough.
A bit of walking around and hand gesturing while speaking helps keep the audience engaged in your presentation.
